About Becki

Hi, I'm Becki! The picture to the left is me from about a million years ago, before I got old and fat. (Actually it's from about thirteen years ago, when I'd recently returned from a period living overseas. It was taken by my friend Cyndi Hilston.)

This is my blog, which means that there will be a lot of talk about books here. But since it's my blog, we won't just be talking about books! You'll also catch me mentioning Ocarina Music, The Sims 4, and Nintendo Games along with occasional references to Paranormal Activity (not the movie series), Television Shows (including Supernatural, Teen Wolf, Switched at Birth, The Fosters, Bates Motel, and Chasing Life). In the right mood, I might even talk about Adoption and Family, Pets, and of course you can't shut me up about blogging!

About Becki's Bookshelf

Basically, this is my personal blog, but I talk about reading and books more than anything else, and I enjoy posting Book Reviews.

I started Becki's Book Shelf because I wanted somewhere to really express myself about the books that I read. I've been writing reviews for quite some time and can never decide whether or not I prefer a quick and easy to read format for book reviews or if I want to give you all the juicy details about what I loved (or hated!) about a book that I've read. This is a new blog -- and not my first book blog, either -- and I'm hoping to try something different with a new format that will invite other readers to dig in and engage with book chat.

My goal is to get people talking about books again. Why can't we dig in and enjoy the meat of a good book, whether it is traditionally published of independently published through Kindle Direct? I'll be posting about reading, and providing Weekly discussion topics for readers to enjoy. Feel free to answer old topics, I'm always checking in on my comments so that I can better engage with readers, and I encourage readers to engage with one another, as well!

Random Facts about Becki

#1 My favorite genre is dystopian fiction. I've been in love with it since I read Stephen King's The Long Walk many years ago in high school.

#2 I used to have great disdain for independent publishing, as it was so filled with style issues. It's growing on me now, and I pick up a lot of free books.

#3 The Kindle Paperwhite is my preferred reading device because I find it easy to take with me and I don't have to worry about hoarding books.

#4 Book hoarding can be a huge problem for me, as I tend to acquire more books than I can possibly read, and they get crammed in everywhere.

#5 I'm married to a biliophile who obtains books even faster than I do, by shopping at Half Price Books in the clearance section of the store. He reads what he buys.

#6 Though she comes from a long line of readers, my seven-year-old daughter doesn't like to read at all, and we've struggled with teaching her.

#7 I'm a horse person, and am often captivated by books involving horses or horsemanship, even if the story otherwise loses my interest.

#8 I prefer to be around cats than to be around dogs, and I've had cats my entire life. There's nothing quite like reading with a cat and a cuppa.

#9 When I was six weeks old (or so) I was adopted as an infant. Adoption has colored most of my life and it factors into many things I do.

#10 I've been in reunion with my original family for over a year now, and things are going well. My original mother means the world to me, in spite of a good adoption.

#11 I prefer to think positively over thinking negatively and understand how negative thinking affects me both physically and emotionally.

#12 My health has been affected by obesity caused by a sedentary lifestyle. I don't move around as much as I should but I'm working on losing weight.

#13 I believe in the power of positive thinking, and often use it to boost my spirits when things aren't going my way. Apart from weight issues, I rarely get sick.

#14 Literary role play sometimes takes over my life for a few weeks at a time. It's a strange hobby for someone in their thirties, but I don't care.

#15 I both knit and crochet, but I prefer to knit over crocheting. Not having to watch my hands as I stitch makes my life much easier.

#16 I'm going deaf. My hearing has been troubled since I was a toddler, but it's been getting worse in the past year, and I may become completely deaf (soon).

#17 While I love all seasons, Autumn is my favorite, and then winter. Snow is one of my favorite things and I love watching it come down!

#18 Although I used to work for a movie theater, I'm not a fan of movies any more and I prefer not to sit through the unless I have a book to read.

#19 I love the theatre with everything in me and one of my greatest regrets is that I never pursued it further than what I did. I'd rather be acting.

#20 My dream is to work with adopted adults on pursuing their true self, with or without identifying information on their parents. This appears to be my calling.
